This is a question that’s there in every one’s mind who want to see progress in their health and fitness. I mean they want to grow from being lazy to active and from being bulky to brisker and light weight.
But, what I have understood from my own fitness journey is that you don’t get what you desire. You rather get what you deserve. I mean it’s about your karma.
With karma, I mean to say the work that you put in is what would yield results proportionately. But, every body is clue less! How to get started? Where to get started?
I can tell you from my 6 plus years of experience that this is the most exciting project that you can ever under take. The project to find your fitness.
And to create that robust fitness that would stand the rigours of seasons and the age is through forming cool fitness habits. Understand that fitness is not a destination, it’s a journey. And there are several landmarks that you will find on the way.
Ever since my childhood, my parents emphasised upon building good habits in general. Most of that used to be about manners, behaviours, career related etc. Unfortunately no body takes health seriously and my parents also didn’t know if that was something to be ingrained in us from childhood.
As long as you are eating food nicely and not being compelled to doctor, you are treated as a healthy person. And this is the biggest misunderstanding in our society. The problem is we hardly understand the concept of health.
As a child, most of us are healthy in the above concept barring fever, cold etc. So we don’t care to really tell our selves that we need to learn about health and fitness just the way we are learning languages, maths, social sciences etc.
Today’s world and the prevalent lifestyles are so anti-healthy that we must teach our kids some good fitness habits. Yes, fitness habits! I am going to talk about them here:
Habit is an action that we perform without the application of decision in our action. It’s simply a way of performing a task or conducting our life. In simple words, habits are the micro programs that make us function on a daily basis.
Childhood is the best time to build healthy habits
If you are a parent like me then I would say, get your kids habituated to healthy habits. I consider health aa a more important asset than the academic performance. You can google anything at any age and learn. You don’t need to really parrotise!
But habits can’t be learnt so easily once you are a grown up. I mean, once you have grown up, you have been frozen into a set of habits around which you will be building yoir life. And breaking those habits is like dismantling an already constructed house! Do you think thats easy?
Be the role model for your kids
Kids dont learn much from what you tell them. They learn from what you show them. I think this is very deep if you are getting the import of my words.
You may be telling a million benefits about keeping good health. You may even show them the causes of I’ll health to scare them to initiate them into fitness. But that’s not gonna make much impact upon their mind. They learn from what they observe.
And as they become independent, they become frozen into the way they saw you: either as a favourite person or a hate person.
I used to hate my father for compelling me to be stronger and be disciplined. But, I thank him more than any being on earth every day for the way he shower ne to live my life.
You can get that badge of honour from your kids if you can show them the efforts into fitness. Go for walks. Stay active at home. Do the home chores. Develop your interest into sports. If you are already a sports person then take them along to events so they could see you!
Keep a note book of daily action
When I started my fitness, I knew one thing for sure from my past failures to keep it going, I lost track of what I was doing.
So, in 2018 I thought that I must hold myself accountable. And to eastablish my accountability, I borrowed a concept from management. Record and document.
Documenting everthing that you do becomes an interesting and inspiring document in die course of time. As you have spent few days and months doing what you longer to and now that you can see it all at one place anytime, you don’t want to lose! You become motivated to keep it flowing.
I have learned somewhere that the great action hero Bruce Lee used to keep notes of his daily exercises that he did in the form of a log book.
Pick one thing at a time
Despite being novice, we treat ourselves as if we know everything about hat is to be done. Because we treat health as a very simplified concept which it is certainly not.
As laypersons, we have goals like companies vision statement . For example most of the people carry their goal as getting lean or losing weight. So they start exercising or gling to gym and lifting dumbells on their own. They don’t know that they could infact harm themselves.
You should either know how to pick one thing at a time which could contribute towards your goal. Or else find a good fitness coach who can take you through the journey. You shouldn’t mind paying to a fitness expert as you don’t mind hefty fees to get treated by a doctor. He could save you a large bill in the long run.
If you don’t have one around you, then immerse yourself into understanding the components of good health first. I am sire you can invest your time, energy and resources if you wish to be healthier and happier. Ok, I hastened to point out that good health is a great source of happiness. Once you have tasted what good health feels like, you may bring yourself on the brink of parting from the materialistic world.
Good health and great fitness is that powerful. There are studies conducted on drug addicts who found themselves switching from drugs to running, body building etc in their rehabs.
Make your health your life goal but build small milestones and achieve them
As I said before that good health is not a destination, it’s a journey. You would fitter tomorrow than today. So, just start and keep tiny goals first. For example, if you are waking up late every morning, then decide to wake up just 2 minutes earlier. And not like moving your alarm from 8 am to straight away 5 am. That would never happen. If it did for few days, you will be frustrated and longing to go back.
This is because our mind and body takes time to adjust. You need to install the habits first to be able to make your body function that way. It won’t happen just out of the blue.
It may take months to transition from 8 am to even 15 minutes early but that way you will be gradually breaking the old habits and transitioning to healthier and better habits. Growth will be slow, very slow at first but I can assure that it will gain momentum in due course of time.
Treat your body as an asset and explore the ways you can maximise your potential
Just because I could improve my health and fitness levels, I have seen a tremendous change in my whole life.
I have seen my relationships getting boost. I am more patient, understanding and kind hearted these days. It is because I am more peaceful and energetic inside to deal with challenges outside.
My relationship with my work has improved. I find a lot of energy and positivity in the middle of chaos as I have learnt to relax and breathe deeper and better. This is my feeling that we keep blaming the outside world for the pain that we feel inside.
A fit body allows to develop a fit mind.
