The year began with one simple resolution. That I would be eating food mostly from home. Let me elaborate on that.
I have always believed that home is the best form of cooked food that I can have. This dawned upon me ever since I started to look after my health and wellness. And it’s easier said than done.
When I began my fitness journey in 2018, I was holed up in a lodge that time. And I missed my home cooked food big time. When you are away from home, you realise its value. But, I made a rule to eat in the same eatery no matter how tasteless the food was that was served to me because at least I didn’t eat the rotten food there.
Once again due to work challenges, I am distanced from my home sweet home. But this time, I decided to not stay in a hotel or lodge but lease an apartment and live and cook by myself. When you are staying alone, you are all on your own.
When I moved, I thought that It would be easy for me to cook my own food. But, for the past 6 months, I have been struggling with that. 85-90 percent of times, I just didnot find enough time to cook on my own. Most of the time for my breakfast, I would either eat outside or simply slip my breakfast away.
So, beginning this year 2025, I made a resolution that the food will be cooked every morning at home and only that food will be consumed as breakfast. So, beginning of the year, I have made up my mind to focus on my meals at home.
Is it a realistic goal
It is not a realistic goal of you look at my past 6 months track record. I have been finding it just next to impossible to get it done. Even though, I would get up early, go for run and do all the chores but show I would miss cooking.
The first challenge is to find a proper cooking stove. I am currently having an induction heater. This induction heater is not so up to the mark. I got it from as it was lying idle. But, now I want to see it’s performance which it is not capable of. So, either I have to some how put up with it. Or else, I have to get another one.
The wifey has been suggesting that I take the gas stove and arrange a gas cylinder locally so that I could facilitate my cooking. So, I may go with the latter idea. The induction heater performance doesn’t interest me much.
The biggest challenge is gonna come from the cooking part. Getting raw material is just a Blinkit away. Anytime, they are willing to deliver any grocery. But, how would I manage the cooking process.
What are my strengths to help me with my resolution
So, you may know or you may not but I am trained cook. A professionally trained one. Yea!!
I had been to a catering college as part of my undergraduate degree where I spent some 3 years to learn cooking!! But, beyond those years, I haven’t tried my hand much at cooking. So I am not an accomplished cook.
May be this year, I might get the chance to learn to express my culinary skills.
As I have been exposed to the art and craft of cooking, it wont be too tough to get the hang of things. It might be a revision at a rapid pace of preparations before cooking.
Cooking is not just cooking. It involves washing vegetables, soaking the lentils, cutting the vegetables in the right sizes and then the proces starts for cooking. As I am going to resume my cooking after a long time, I would prefer to work on the basics first!
Had a OK start on day 1
So, on the first day of the month, I was resolved to cook and eat or atleast do something symbolically to kickstart on my new year resolution.
I found some small portion of dough left from the last night. So, I decided to roll it in the form of chappati and have it. I rolled it and created a thin pancake like thing called Roti/ Chappati. Just a single one and spread some ghee(clarified butter) over it and has it hurriedly.
Not bad for a start. What do you say ?
