You might wonder about these 5Ks, 10Ks, 21Ks. What are they? And how do you relate these terms to running?

Are you an enthusiastic runner? If you are one of those who are excited to run long and far, then I am sure that you would love to know about these terms. These are the kind of races that you can participate in and have fun. The Long distance running these days has taken many smaller formats like 5K, 10K, etc.

When a runner wants to talk about her running, she would prefer to use those terms. If you watch one runner talking to another, you may find them using a lot of running jargon. But, don’t worry, they are not too tough to crack. As you would gain your ground in running, you will find them joining your lingo uninvited.

5K stands for Five Kilometres. Likewise, you can decipher 10K. Yes, that’s right. In the same way, we have some other formats like 21K, 42K etc. You may find it interesting to know that a full marathon has 42 km. So, if you have run a full marathon, you can claim yourself you be a Runner Par Excellence. You should give yourself a pat on the back for attaining such a great height in running.

Run to be Resilient

Running is not just a physical activity. It is a mental act too. When you run, your mind also runs. The act of running involves engaging the mind as well as the body. You must have heard of a Runner’s High. Runner’s high is a feeling people attain when they keep running for long and feel like never stopping!

Since the time I have started to run, I have seen tremendous change happening in my life. And this change has happened to me for good. Running can help you learn life’s important skills. Running challenges you. It throws a new challenge at you every day albeit not so challenging that you surrender.

Before I can go further and explain myself, let me first tell you about the meaning of Resilience. The Cambridge Dictionary describes Resilience as an ability to be happy, successful, etc again after something difficult or bad has happened. I call it, Coming Back Stronger in life after you are have been struck with a tragedy.

Many a time it happens that you don’t feel like you are living a life of your dreams. And this happens even with those who have attained a respectable social and economic status. There is a lot that can be blamed on the fast pace of life that we are living in. The modern lifestyle that focusses on acquiring material wealth has somehow eluded us from the simple pleasure that life offers.

In our quest to become materially prosperous we have literally surrendered ourselves to the ramifications of modern work culture. At this age, a lot of our time is spent on our desktops and mobile phones. Working 12 hours a day in the office and not taking care of our diet, sleep, and overall health has become the norm of the day. It’s considered a taken.

Would you agree if I told you that there is emotional and mental distress that we suffer every day as a result of hectic work life? I am sure you would! There is a steep rise in the deterioration of mental health

Run in your best running gear

I am a self-trained runner. Everything about running came as a discovery to me and it took me a long time to understand the basics.

Running Gear:

When you are running, your body is going to respond in varied ways. If it is summers, you will sweat. Your body type might be one where you may sweat profusely or your body type may be such that you don’t. But, even if you are not going to sweat as much as I do, you would still feel the suffocation if you are wearing inappropriate running gear.

You would require different running gear for different seasons: Running in summers, winters, rains etc. Here are few basic guidelines that I would like t share with you:

  • Type of Clothing that you wear for running: When I started, I would wear cotton on my body. Cotton can be good when you don’t sweat. So, it will be good if you are walking or taking a stroll. But, if you are running then, I would recommend you to switch from Cotton made t-shirts to something that can take out sweat from your body and throw it out and you don’t feel a difference throughout the run.
  • Type of Shoes: Shoes are as important as your clothing. In fact, shoes would play a bigger role in your running. Good quality shoes that are specially made for running are recommended. Most of us are wearing the wrong type of shoes while running and we suffer from joint pains, shin splints, and ankle injuries just because we have chosen the wrong type of shoes.

A Plane Runner

Are you a plane runner? I mean, people talk about a lot of stuff that deals with running. 5k,10k, Half-Marathon and Full Marathons and then, Ultra-Marathons. There are then categories like Road Running, Trail Running and so on. The list just keeps adding up every day

Running in Urban Locations

Hi All! How are you all Urban Dwellers!

I have often found my friends telling me that they are unable to find space for running in big cities. Most of my friends live in major cities across the planet. Especially India.

Indian cities are mostly unorganized. Add to that the kind of chaos you have of traffic, you have the perfect reason to stay indoors.

Running on a treadmill, therefore, may seem to be a logical solution to that. And to a certain extent, I would agree with you. But, I must add that there are inherent benefits of running out in the open that you won’t find on a treadmill inside your drawing-room.
