HEALTHY FITNESS TIPS FOR LOCKDOWN.

When the whole world has come under lockdown, there is everything that has gone out of our reach.  The people are now distancing themselves from each other.  The Gymnasiums are closed.  Even if they open in any place, the people over there are not sure if they should go there in the times of pandemic. 

Most of the fitness clubs are closed.  In such a situation, it has become difficult to stay inspired and motivated and continue our fitness regimen. 

Recently, I came across a very old piece of writing on “Self Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Reading it triggered a series of thoughts in my mind.  In this post, I shall discuss with you the 05 ways that you can be self-reliant in your health and fitness journey. 

Self Reliance is the quality of depending on your own self instead of relying on others/outside sources.  When people have self-reliance, they are independent and autonomous.  So, here are 5 ways, you can be dependent on the self for your health and fitness.

1. GROWN YOUR OWN FOOD

Most of the things that we eat and consume we buy from the markets.  Check if you have the scope of growing your own food. 

My mother has a small and beautiful kitchen garden.  And she grows almost everything that she eats and consumes.  Seasonal vegetables and fruits like Guava, Papaya, and Banana, etc.  She also grows garlic, turmeric, basil, etc.

She consumes what she grows.  I have realized after all these years that being closest to the food that you consume is the best way to ensure its nutritional content and freshness.   Now, I know not everyone will be able to do this.  So, for them is my next point.

2. EAT LOCAL

We should try to eat only seasonal foods.  The reason i am telling you is this is that we live in an era of cold storages.  Many of the fruits and vegetables are frozen and kept in store for several months for consumption.  You should avoid such food items. 

Remember, the closer your stay to your food chain and without human intervention, the better you will be able to maintain your health.    

3. COOK YOUR FOOD YOURSELF

Not everyone would have the privilege to grow their own food.  But, all of us have a choice to cook our own food.  All this while, we have been eating outside as a matter of celebration.   Or, maybe our lunch because we did not carry it from home or we just loved to go outside and grab that piece of burger or pizza.  It could be that we loved to dine at a particular place for taste and hospitality.

But, I would say: Inculcate the habit of cooking in you.  When you would cook yourself, you will have full control over what goes into your food.  You will be able to eat what your body needs and asks for. You will get the nutrition that you are looking for.

There are zillion sites and blogs available where you can go and watch the recipes to learn cooking.  So, you actually have no excuse to not learn irrespective of your social and economic status.  You can still do it. 

I am not asking you to cook every day.  You can just start cooking once or twice a month to start with.  This could be your weekend or holiday.

4. YOUR HOME IS YOUR GYM

I always thought about the reason why I could never continue my fitness journey for a long time period.  I would often start and give up soon until running happened to me in 2018 and changed my whole life. 

I later realized that I was dependent on the gym and my friends.  My “go-to” Gymnasium was in my office.  So, on those days, I did not go to work, I felt like a burden to walk up to office gymnasium just for working out my abs or running on a treadmill. 

The reason was that I had to drive through a long distance to arrive at the place.  And I found no sense in disturbing my peace of mind on those days.  Sometimes, I fell sick or went home on break.  So, these all became the reason for my irregularity.  When I would come back, I would hardly feel the urge to reconnect.  And this is how all the momentum that I had built would gradually fade away.

So, when I took up running, almost every such excuse disappeared.  I had full control over when and where I ran. I could literally run anywhere and everywhere.  And also at anytime.  No one could stop me from doing that.

Gyms are a passé now.  You can do more at home during lockdown than anywhere else. 

5. MAKE HOUSEKEEPING THE PART OF YOUR WORKOUTS.

We don’t have maids at home.  I always thought that this is a social and economic status symbol until I could afford one.  But, almost at the same time, I started to venture into my fitness journey and came to some big realization on this aspect.

The cleaning work like dusting, sweeping, and mopping are great ways to move our bodies at home.  They are the mild intensity exercises that we can do every day.  People generally shun it for attitude issues.  These activities are looked down upon by social standards.

But, I would say, it’s high time we came out of these misconceptions.   You can start by doing cleaning work on the weekends.  You can make our cleaning time as a fun time and involve the other family members.  This will certainly raise the health quotient of the family. 

The point is that we need to find avenues on our own by which we can be self-driven and self-reliant so that we would need the least push from outside and are able to get the maximum pull for our fitness all within ourselves.

  1. I agree about exercise at home. When I use to go to the gym, I would many times find every excuse not to drive there. It took much more of my time to drive back and forth. But, with running, it can be done easily every day! Going to the gym wasted 1hr of driving for me. That hour that I could have focused on other areas of self improvement. The hour I have gained by not going to the gym has given me so much more fulfillment than the time I spent in the gym. Plus exercise at home is free!!
